These technologies can create highly realistic and convincing fake content, making it increasingly difficult to distinguish truth from falsehood.

Social media platforms play a significant role in the spread of misinformation and disinformation. The ability to share content rapidly and widely, combined with algorithms that prioritize engagement over accuracy, creates an environment conducive to the viral spread of false or misleading information.   • Disseminating misleading polling data or fake "exit polls" to create a false perception of which candidate is leading or will win, as mentioned happening in Mexico's 2000 election.

Affecting Perceptions of Celebrities/Public Figures:

  • Digitally manipulating images or videos of public figures to make them appear to be doing or saying things they did not, such as the edited image falsely depicting Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene doing a Nazi salute.

Rejecting Science:

  • Propagating false or misleading information that contradicts established scientific evidence and consensus, such as denying the reality of climate change or spreading misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines.

Countering the spread of misinformation and disinformation requires a multi-faceted approach, including media literacy education, fact-checking initiatives, platform accountability, and regulatory measures to address the root causes and vectors of propagation.
